Mahershalla Ali Eyed for ‘True Detective’ Season 3

Not long ago, news spread that HBO was thinking of reviving their dormant True Detective property as a collaboration between series creator Nic Pizolatto and Deadwood mastermind David Milch. HBO’s leadership has expressed regrets that the moody crime drama’s second series was so poorly received by critics and fans alike and hoped to right the ship. But without a confirmed commitment to a third season it has been hard to get too excited about the possibilities.

The third season seems much closer to reality, however, with the first rumor of casting for the prospective third season. With previous seasons that starred the likes of Colin Ferrell and Matthew McConaughey, True Detective is a series that has not shied away from big-name talent. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO is courting Oscar winner Mahershalla Ali for a leading role in the series. In addition to his recent Best Supporting Actor win for Moonlight, Ali has already found success on television with roles on Netflix’s House of Cards and Luke Cage, so he is definitely the kind of rising star who could bring new sets of eyes to Pizolatto’s dark and twisting narratives. Ali’s involvement is not yet finalized, however. Plus there is no word of whether McConaughey’s ambition to return will be considered, nor that the new season has been officially green-lit.

The state of True Detective has become a mystery worthy of the show itself, but if a talent of Ali’s caliber is being considered, then the signs are looking more and more favorable all the time.
