Henry Cavill Will Become ‘The Witcher’ for Netflix

Long before Henry Cavill was on the big screen an ass kicking mustache or the man of steel, he was simply the 1st Duke of Suffolk on ‘The Tudors’. Those who enjoyed seeing the actor swing a sword got a bit of good news recently. Cavill will be returning to television next year when he stars in Netflix’s adaptation of ‘The Witcher‘. He will be playing the role Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher who hunts monsters. The new series is based on the fantasy novels of Andrzej Sapkowski.

The show will be written and run by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. Hissrich has experience with Netflix and she has served as a writer for both ‘Daredevil’ and ‘The Defenders’. The series already has all of its directors lined up including Alik Sakharov. Sakharov’s most notable work for me is the ‘Game of Thrones’ episode “The Climb”. If he can bring that same scale to ‘The Witcher‘, Netflix might have a hit on their hands. Sapkowski will also be involved in the project as a creative consultant. Similar to the George R.R. Martin.

I didn’t realize ‘The Witcher‘ was such a huge piece of IP. I knew of the ‘Wild Hunt’ video game, because we all did. But honestly had it not had 3 in the title, I would have never known more video games preceded it.Let alone countless novels and short stories, a previous film and television adaption & a tabletop and card game. This is a world famous collection of middle ages and monsters themed work and it makes sense that Netflix would be eager to snatch it up.

We’ve kind of danced around it at this point, but let’s just say it. Netflix wants their ‘Game of Thrones’. Just like Amazon wants their own with ‘Lord of the Rings’ or Showtime with ‘Halo’. It might seem like a bad idea to have everyone chasing the model of one show. However, I really like ‘Game of Thrones’. If all these networks are successful and I suddenly have three more ‘Game of Thrones’ style shows in my life, I will not be complaining.

Do you think Henry Cavill is a good pick for Geralt of Rivia?
