With the release of Suicide Squad, the “Clown Prince of Crime,” The Joker, returned to the big screen for the first time since Heath Ledger portrayed him in 2008’s The Dark Knight. The latest appearance of the iconic villain makes it the fifth time that The Joker has appeared in movie theaters, with each appearance more different from the last.
Jared Leto plays him in Suicide Squad. When commenting on Ledger’s performance, which won the actor a posthumous Academy Award, Leto said, “Heath did an impeccable, perfect performance as The Joker. It’s one of the best performances ever in cinema.” Admitting that he had big shoes to fill, he felt comforted by the fact that others, such as Jack Nicholson, had taken on the iconic role before.
This all got us to thinking, what are the best performances by actors playing The Joker? We ranked them below from best to… bestest?
5 Jared Leto (Suicide Squad, 2016)
More a supporting player than a star, The Joker wasn’t in Suicide Squad long enough to fully compare him to The Jokers in other movies. Since he’s the newest, and some films and performances get better with age, Leto gets the number five spot.
4 Mark Hamill (Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, 1993)
Do cartoons count? Fans love the depiction of The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, the success of which caused Warner Bros. to produce a full-length theatrical movie. Hamill’s voice personifies the very essence of the villain each and every time he plays him.
