After years of hard work on the stand-up trail, he finally landed a role that would propel him into popular culture and fuel a lot of Halloween costumes in 2009 when he took on the role of Alan in The Hangover. Domestically, The Hangover, is the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy of all-time earning $277.3 million in the States. Zach once again infused his stand-up act into this project as well. When the cop calls Alan fat Jesus, this is a reference to’ Zach Galafianakis”s stand up, “I look like a fat Jesus.” Later in the film he dials up another reference; Alan makes a joke about him not being allowed near schools or a Chuck E. Cheese, a direct reference to one of his staple jokes in his stand up: “When you look like I do, it’s hard to get a table for one at Chuck E. Cheese.”
Regarding the explicit shots in the final photo slide show in which his character is seen receiving fellatio in an elevator, Zach Galifianakis confirmed that a prosthesis was used for the scene, and that he had been more embarrassed than anyone else during the creation of the shot. “You would think that I wouldn’t be the one who was embarrassed; I was extremely embarrassed. I really didn’t even want it in there. I offered Todd’s assistant a lot of money to convince him to take it out of the movie. I did. But it made it in there.”
1. Between Two Ferns
The Funny or Die original, Between Two Ferns, might be one of the most oddest talk shows of all-time. Although Eric Andre would beg to differ. Produced by comedy heavyweight and Comedy Bang Bang host Scott Auckerman, Galifianakis sits down with some of the biggest names in Hollywood as they engage in some of the most awkward conversations in talk show history.
But Zach made comedy history when he took Between Two Ferns to the White House for a very special guest. President Barack Obama!
If you gut is still intact, share some of your favorite moments from Zach’s career that we didn’t cover in our list. I dare you.
